Japan Crags

Ogawayama (小川山)

Granite slabs, cracks and boulders in a forested valley in Kawakami village, Nagano. One of the best-known free-climbing areas in Japan, and a good first stop for a climbing trip from Tokyo. Most routes are a single pitch, so it suits a wide range of grades.

Getting there

By car (recommended). You can drive up to the campground. A car cuts the trip down a lot, and you need it to carry gear and food. From Tokyo, go to Kawakami village by expressway and local road; check the route in your navigation app.

By public transport. Possible, but slow. The nearest station is Shinanokawakami (信濃川上). From Tokyo it takes at least two trains. A public bus runs from the station, but it stops about 5 km below the campground, so you have to walk or take a taxi for the last part. One report puts the taxi at about 6,000 yen one way (price may have changed).

Camp, parking and costs

The Mawarime-daira campground is the base for most climbers. In 2024 it charged an entry fee of about 500 yen per person, which covered day use and parking. A free parking lot lower in the valley was reported closed in September 2024.

Fees and rules change. Check the current entry fee, tent fee and parking rules on the official site, ogawayama.online, before you go.

Climbing

Ogawayama has been a free-climbing mecca since the 1980s. Rocks are spread along the valley; ask in the car park what is in condition. A route-by-route guide and an offline map will follow.
