Etiquette and local rules
Climbing in Japan depends on goodwill between climbers, landowners and local communities. A few habits go a long way. Each crag and campground can also have its own rules, and the rules can change, so follow the signs and ask staff.
At the crag
- Park only in the designated places. Never block a road, a field or a private entrance.
- Take all your rubbish home, including tape and cigarette ends. Bins are often not provided.
- Use the toilets where they exist. Where there are none, carry your waste out.
- Keep noise down, especially near houses and campgrounds, and early and late in the day.
- Respect closures and notices. Some crags close for landowners, nesting birds or repair work. Do not climb where a sign or a local asks you not to.
- Brush chalk off the rock when you can, and do not chip, glue or modify holds.
- Leave no trace on the approach: do not cut trees, make new paths or leave fixed gear.
Campgrounds and lodging
- Check each place's rules on fires, quiet hours, and check-in and check-out times.
- Camp and cook only where it is allowed.
Local relations
- Greet people you meet on the road and at the crag.
- If a landowner or a local asks you to stop, stop and leave quietly.
- Some crags are sensitive because of access disputes. Do not post the location of a closed crag.
Safety
- Wear a helmet where rock can fall.
- Tell someone where you are going.
- Emergency numbers: 110 (police), 119 (fire and ambulance).
